Bhapa Chingri – Steamed Prawn – Shrimp in Mustard Sauce  

When I see shrimp, the first dish that comes to my mind is Bhapa Chingri or steamed shrimp. Chingri Bhapa is an authentic traditional Bengali recipe. It is enjoyed hot with white rice. The pungent taste of mustard paste and mustard oil makes the Bhapa Chingri a delicious dish. It is very simple quick and easy recipe.

Serving Size: 2-3 people

Cooking Time: 45 mins


  • Fresh Tiger Shrimp or Bagda Chingri ( cut and cleaned and make sure to remove the vein from the all shrimps)
  • Half a cup of Shredded Coconut
  • Half a cup of Coconut Milk
  • 5 Green Chillies Slit
  • 1 tsp Black Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Yellow Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Posto or Poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Mustard oil
  • Salt and Sugar to taste

Cooking Procedure:

  1. First soak mustard seeds and poppy seeds in little bit of water for about half an hour. Season the shrimp with little bit of turmeric powder and salt.
  2. Make a paste in the mixer grinder, add mustard seeds, poppy seeds few green chillies. Add  turmeric powder into the paste and mix well and this will give you a nice golden color into this mixture.
  3. Arrange all the shrimps nicely in a steel tiffin box.
  4. Add the mustard and poppy seeds paste then add the coconut milk, shredded coconut and green chillies.
  5. For gravy add a little bit of water and half a tsp of sugar. Lastly add some fresh mustard oil and close  the tiffin box.
  6. Preheat oven to 500 degree F. Cook this in the oven for half an hour. If you don’t have an oven you can prepare this in a pressure cooker or microwave as well.
  7. Remove from oven when done.

Serving Suggestion:

Enjoy Bhapa Chingri or Steamed Shrimp with hot white rice. It takes about 45 mins to prepare this recipe and serves 2-3 people.
