Lentils with Bottle Gourd, Lau Dal  



Dal is more or less Bengal’s everyday dish.


Serving Size: 4

Cooking Time: 20 mins

  1. 500 gm Mug Dal
  2. 250 gm Bottle Gourd
  3. 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Sugar to taste
  6. 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  7. 1 tsp Kalo Jeera
  8. 2 Bay Leaf
  9. 1  Dried Red Chilly


Cooking procedure:

Take a Bottle Gourd



Cut the lau



Roast the moongdal for 8 to 10 minutes. The dal will acquire a lighter color. Be careful that they do not turn a dark brown. Transfer to a bowl & wash it.



Bring water to a boil & stir in the dal along with the turmeric powder, salt,and lau. Simmer, covered, until the dal is tender, 35 to 45 minutes. Boil the dal & lauki and keep aside.




Heat oil in a pan, add bay-leaf, chilli, cumin seeds  for sauté. Add pre-boiled dal, lau and cook it for few sec.




Serving Suggestions:

The dal is ready to serve with hot rice
