Kakrar Jhal – Crab Masala Curry  

I mostly prefer crabs cooked in Indian style. This is a spicy dish and It’s really delicious. There are different types of crab. I am using the Rock Crab but this recipe can be prepared with any types of crabs.

Cooking Time: 45 mins


  • 2 medium size Crab cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 2 Onion chopped
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic crushed
  • 1″ long ginger crushed
  • 1 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp Cumin Powder
  • Mustard oil
  • Salt & Sugar to taste

Cooking Procedure

  1. Sprinkle salt and turmeric on the crab and mix it evenly.
  2. Heat mustard oil and fry the crab in a medium heat for about 5-7 mins. Take it out of the pan when done.
  3. Fry the crab shell and keep it aside. Well úse it to serve the curry inside the shell.
  4. Add little more oil and fry the onion until it is light brown.
  5. Add ginger garlic paste and mix well and fry it for 2 more mins.
  6. After 2 mins add the chopped tomatoes. When tomatoes are completely crushed add cumin powder, turmeric powder and red chilly powder. Stir well and add little water so that it does not burn
  7. Add salt and sugar and mix well.
  8. Add water as required for making the curry. When water boils add the fried crabs except the shells.
  9. Cover the lid and cook it for 5 more mins. Take it out of the heat when done

Serving Suggestion:

Crab Masala curry is now ready. Serve it with white rice. It took about 45 mins to prepare this recipe and serves 2 people.
